Clarke Moore

'Twas the night before Christmas, when
all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

By the time he was through with the story, little Greta was fast asleep with her
head upon his lap. He closed the book slowly and allowed a wistful look to come
to his youthful features. Once upon a time, he had laid his head upon someone’s
lap and had listened to this story being read to him over and over again.
“Just one more time,” he would plead and his reader would be powerless to resist
the sweet innocence in those green eyes.
Of course he had never known that this story had originated from the human
world. He had always believed that this St. Nicholas was one who possessed some
kind of magic but the very special kind. He had always hoped that he would be
able to see the great white-bearded man someday, but he had grown up before he
even realized it.
“Christmas day is a special time for all good boys and girls to get their
presents,” someone would say.
But he had never really understood that, having always had presents waiting for
him at the bottom of the large Christmas tree. Of course there had been some
years when he had not gotten very much and throwing a fit hadn’t helped his
cause for the next year either.
And then there had been the numerous times he had stayed awake, crawling along
his large bed and tiptoeing to the window, in the hopes of seeing St. Nicholas
with his sleigh. He always wondered why the great man never showed up and his
young mind had deduced that he had always fallen asleep and missed the grand
event.
But he was older now and much wiser. The years had gone by and he had learned of
the secret behind ol’ St. Nicholas. He began to caress the little girl’s hair
almost absently, feeling his lashes growing heavier as the minutes ticked by. He
wondered what dreams she was having tonight. Was she dreaming of sugar plum
fairies and snow-capped mountains? Would she be dreaming of having a white
Christmas or riding St. Nicholas’s sleigh?
Whatever dreams she might have, he knew that they would be good ones. For even
though he was all grown up now, the child within him would always believe in the
great man with the white beard, who had the most beautiful magic in the world.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Warmth:
Featuring: Heero+Duo
“Easy now, Heero. You don’t wanna make a dent on my new wall, do ya?”
“Shut up, Duo. We’ve been carrying this thing for almost two flights of stairs!
Damn it…”
“It’s not my fault the elevator decided to break down today,” the boy with the
braid mumbled as he arched his neck (at a rather awkward angle) to look behind
him. Realizing they had finally reached the door to his new apartment, he kicked
the door open with a boot-clad feet and cursed as it slammed shut again in his
face.
Heero, who had found nothing to smile about since agreeing to help Duo with this
crazy plan for the evening, suddenly found the situation incredibly funny. He
snickered and shrugged as he got a glare for his efforts.
With another grunt, Duo kicked open the door, only this time, he used a hip to
hold it in place, while trying to maneuver his end of the long box into the
empty room. Almost two minutes of quite limber body movements, both boys finally
had themselves and their burden inside. The door slammed shut behind them
leaving them in darkness for a moment - that was until Heero found the switch…
“Only one bulb…” he observed dryly as the lone object made lonesome fizzle
noises as if hoping for one more shot at being useful.
“I didn’t have the time to change it,” his companion explained with a grumble as
he began to open up the box impatiently. “Hand me that instruction manual.”
Doing as he was told, Heero sat crossed legged on the cold cement floor and
stared at their surroundings with a small smile. He was proud of his friend’s
accomplishment in finding a place for himself. After months of fruitless
searching, Duo had finally found a place to call his own and although there was
practically nothing in the small living space, there was something oddly
comforting about it.
“It’s freezing in here,” he commented as he wrapped his jacket around his form a
bit tighter and again got a non-committal grumble for his observation. He
continued to watch as Duo fiddled with more lights and then…
“Voila! All done!” the American exclaimed in delight as he stood back to admire
his handiwork. “So? What do you think?”
Heero rose to his feet to stand beside Duo. With a quick glance at his grinning
friend, he felt a matching one on his features. It was so out of place in the
empty room but yet…
“It’s very nice, Duo. Very nice,” he said with a nod as he wrapped his arms
around his partner’s waist from behind. “You did a great job.”
“So like…Merry Christmas and all of that, right?” Duo whispered with a dark
blush staining his cheeks as the lights from the small white Christmas tree, he
had so lovingly erected, were reflected in his deep blue eyes.
“Yes, indeed,” Heero replied while the melancholy chimes of a church bell in the
distance signaled the midnight hour. “And a very Merry Christmas to you as well,
my Duo.”

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

Milk and Cookies:
Featuring: Johan+Dieter
Although, Johan had been living with them for a while now, Dieter was still a
bit wary and shy around the older man. The blond had spoken to him once in a
while, but Dieter had noticed that Johan had the tendency to stay on his own and
away from the rest of them.
Tenma had always told him to ‘Keep an eye on Johan for me when I’m gone’ and
although the young boy hadn’t truly understood what he had meant, he had done
his best to keep his word. If Johan made any signs of trying to escape, Dieter
had access to a cell phone that could be used to contact either Tenma or Doctor
Reichwein.
Today was just another one of those days. Tenma had another late call at a
patient’s house and so it was only he and Johan in the apartment. He hummed
softly to himself as he kicked his soccer ball between his feet. He lifted his
head to glance at Johan, who had been reading a book beside the window. The snow
was beginning to fall heavier and heavier and Dieter wondered if Tenma would be
able to make it back home on time tonight.
Suddenly bored with playing soccer with himself, Dieter decided to swallow his
shyness and slight fear to engage in conversation with his silent companion.
Placing his ball gently upon the couch, he walked slowly towards Johan with his
hands behind his back. He stopped at what he considered to be a safe distance
and cocked his head to the side.
“Wha…what are you reading?” he asked softly and then sucked in a breath in
anticipation of the rebuttal or irritated response. He definitely wasn’t
expecting the surprised and slightly pleased look on the older man’s face.
“Ah, Dieter,” Johan began in the almost sing-song voice of his that had the
younger boy’s cheeks flaming with color. “I’m actually reading a story about the
holidays. The Christmas holidays.”
“Christ…mas?” Dieter asked now curious despite his trepidations.
“Uh huh.” Johan closed the book and pointed to the cover. There was an image of
a fat man in a red suit with a white beard. He was laughing and looked quite
pleased. “This is…”
“Santa Claus,” Dieter finished with a smile. “I know all about him. He lives in
the North Pole and likes to eat and drink milk and cookies!”
He stopped with an embarrassed look on his features, wondering if Johan was
going to consider him too childish for speaking so eagerly about the holiday.
But to his delight, Johan grinned along with him and nodded. “Yes, indeed. Milk
and cookies are his favorite food to eat and drink. And guess what?”
“What?”
“They are my favorite things too.”
“Really?” Dieter’s grin widened. “I like milk and cookies too!”
Johan’s soft laughter filled the young boy’s heart with giddy pleasure. He had
only thought he could be friends with Tenma and the old doctor, but it was nice
to know that Johan wasn’t so unapproachable. Besides, Tenma had said that Johan
was changed now, so it was okay to be…friends.
“Would you…” He blushed and shuffled his feet from one side to the other. “Would
you like to share some with me?” he offered with a shy smile.
“Yes…yes, I would love to, Dieter,” Johan replied with a warm smile of his own.
“And Dieter…”
“Yes, Johan?” The boy asked with a quizzical look as he had already taken off
towards the kitchen in his excitement.
“Thank you…” Johan finished enigmatically as he opened up his book and tapped
the page gently. “Now, hurry up with our snacks. I want you to listen to this
story as well.”
And nodding happily, Dieter knew that he would have something really good to
tell Tenma when he came back home.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

Winter Kisses:
Featuring: Akira+Hikaru
Akira sighed for the one millionth time as he watched Hikaru shake the small box
again. To think he had spent hours searching for the perfect gift to get for his
friend, only to have it be rattled like a toy was rather unnerving.
“Shindo…” he began to complain as his hands tightened around his own wrapped
box. It hadn’t been wrapped very well and Akira could only assume that Hikaru
had done it rather hastily. For his part, he had taken his time in making sure
that the blond’s gift had been wrapped with the most beautiful paper he could
find. He had spent weeks agonizing over what to get for Shindo and now…
“All right, already, if you’re so adamant in wanting to know what’s in it, why
don’t you just open it?” Akira finally blurted out in frustration as he stopped
beneath a naked tree amongst several in the nearly empty park. He hugged his
jacket tighter around his body, shivering slightly as the gray skies gave way to
more icy snowflakes.
“Really? I can open it now? But…”
“But what, Shindo?” he asked, watching the tendrils of cold smoke escape his
lips and into the air. “Don’t you want to see it? You’ve been shaking it since
we left the salon so...”
But to his surprise, Shindo placed a gloved finger against Akira’s lips with a
warm smile on his handsome features. “Tomorrow is Christmas day and I’ll open it
then like we promised, okay?”
“Shin…”
“I’m sure that whatever’s in here is going to be something that I’ll cherish for
a long time to come, Touya.”
Akira felt his cheeks grow hot despite the cold and staring into those clear
green eyes made him feel even more queasy inside. He lowered his lashes and
caressed the small box within the deep pocket of his jacket. He was unable to
stop the small smile that came to his lips as he wondered just what lay within
the slightly crumpled green foil wrap.
“Shindo…I…” Words failed him and so he settled for leaning forward to place a
soft and shy kiss upon his friend’s forehead before turning away with flaming
cheeks and hastened steps. “Come on already! We’re going to be late and we might
miss the train!”
Hikaru Shindo shook his head lightly to release himself from the dazed state the
surprise kiss had left him. Akira’s soft kiss had sent a shot of warmth down his
spine and to his toes. He felt like giggling but settled for a small laugh as he
tried to catch up with his striding partner. And as he slipped an arm within and
around Akira’s, he captured the dark-haired boy’s surprised gasp with a quick
kiss of his own.
“Merry Christmas to you as well, Touya,” he said around a warm smile as the snow
came down around them like soft winter kisses. “Merry Christmas to you…”
~Fin~
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Snowflake:
Featuring: Naruto+Sasuke
“Sn…ow. Sn…ow. Sn…ow.”
Naruto swung his legs back and forth over the ledge of the rooftop, repeating
the words to himself over and over again. Perhaps if he said them long enough,
he would be able to witness the magical sensation of frozen water from the
skies. But after almost five minutes of saying ‘Snow’, he fell on his back and
stared into the clear blue skies with a heavy sigh.
Iruka-sensei had made it sound like so much fun. The older man had said that
once upon a time snow had fallen in the Hidden Leaf and they had had so much fun
making snowmen and having snow fights with one another. Naruto scratched his
nose gently and wondered (and not for the first time that day) if Iruka sensei
was making up the story as usual. He could hardly tell (sometimes) if the older
man was lying or not. It really was frustrating.
“Snow…let it snow…let it snow…let it snow…”
“What are you mumbling to yourself about, Naruto?”
Not bothering to sit up, Naruto made a face and pointed to the heavens. “Snow.”
“Huh?”
“Snow, Sasuke. Snow! Don’t you even know what that is?!” He felt a bit smug.
Here was one thing that he did know about and Sasuke didn’t…
“Of course I know what snow is, idiot,” came the light huff that sent Naruto’s
hopes deflating in an instant. And to make matters worse, he could hear Sasuke
making himself comfortable beside him.
“Why are you sitting beside me?” he asked defensively. “There’s lots of other
places you can go sit!”
“I read it in a book once,” Sasuke said, ignoring Naruto’s comments. “It’s
frozen ice…”
“Yes, it’s frozen ice from the skies. Big deal.”
“I wish it would snow here.”
Naruto blinked at the soft confession, glancing sideways at Sasuke’s prone
profile with a raised brow.
“It never snows in the Leaf…”
“Actually it did once…” Naruto interrupted with yet another smug grin.
“Iruka-sensei said…”
“And you believe whatever he says, right?”
“And just what is that supposed to mean?” Naruto sat upright, ready to start a
fight if need be. “I believe…”
Sasuke moved so fast that Naruto was left gasping for air in surprise as he
found himself suddenly staring into his teammate’s eager black eyes. “Open your
hand, Naruto,” he said quietly but firmly.
Still wary of the other’s intention, the blond opened up his hand slowly and
blinked as Sasuke placed something rather small and cold within his palm. He was
just about to open it to see, when Sasuke shook his head quickly.
“Cup it within your hands and look carefully,” he advised with a small smile.
“You don’t want it to melt quickly, do you?”
Naruto could feel his heart pounding as he did as he was told. He opened up his
cupped hands a little - like opening a box filled with precious treasure - and
sucked in a breath at the delicate crystal that seemed to glow within the
shadows his flesh created. He couldn’t stop the smile that came to his features,
neither did he protest much as he felt Sasuke’s hair tickle his forehead.
They both stared at the single drop of precious ice, holding their breaths as if
knowing that it might make the illusion go away.
“Where did you get this from, Sasuke?” Naruto asked breathlessly.
But all he got was a light shrug and a small but enigmatic smile in return.
“Just think of it as my Christmas gift to you, Naruto. It will melt eventually
but the memory of its beauty and sensation will always remain inside of you.
There will always be the magic of winter and snow in your heart, Naruto but
finding the perfect snowflake makes it all worthwhile.”
